2016 will always be known for the biggest lotto jackpot in history. Until the American giant of a lottery record-breaking jackpot gets broken of course. Let’s take a look at all the biggest Powerball jackpots to date.
People play the lottery to win and while entering our lucky lottery numbers whether inspired by special dates close to the heart, numerology or simply various numbers they see in their immediate surroundings, they all imagine the moment they realise that they have hit the big one.
After that it’s “the list” that takes over. You know the one. New house in the perfect location, supercar in the driveway, children living every day as if its Christmas morning and buying everything they have always wanted.
For a few lucky lottery players, their wildest dreams did come true and by wild we mean the biggest and best US Powerball jackpots. Let’s take a look at the top Powerball jackpot winners to date, and naturally we begin with the Billion Dollar Lotto Jackpot!
3 winners from California, Tennessee, and Florida - $1.586 billion
Lottery players all over the world could not believe their eyes when they saw the US Powerball jackpot roll over to the Billion Dollar mark. Lotto jackpot fever broke out not only in America, but all over the world thanks to online lottery websites such as PlayUSALotteries.com, enabling lottery enthusiasts to also buy Powerball tickets online.
Three Powerball ticket holders eventually won the biggest Powerball jackpot and shared the $1.586 billion. They came from California, Tennessee and Florida. Each ticket holder won 528.8 million.
The Biggest Ever Lottery Win On a Single Ticket
In August 2017, Mavis Wanczyk entered the Powerball which sat at a whopping $758.7 million! On the night of the draw, she joked with a coworker saying that she would never win the jackpot and that it was "never going to be me. It was just a pipe dream that I've always had.", she explained.
The pipe dream that Mavis had quickly turned into a reality when she found out she held the winning ticket. After spending 32 years working at Mercy Centre in Springfield, Mavis quit her job in favour for some "me-time". After winning she joked on Facebook that she needed a vacation and "by vacation, I mean I need to move away and find a new job. On the beach. With rum". Mavis still holds the record of the biggest ever lottery win on a single ticket.
Big Lottery Wins on a single ticket ticket through history
Looking at the Billion Dollar Jackpot, you would quite easily think that even though the top prize was shared between three tickets, each of these tickets would easily hold the record of the biggest jackpot ever won on a single ticket. Wrong. In May 2013, the US Powerball once again made history, when Ms. Gloria C. Mackenzie from Florida claimed the full jackpot amount on one ticket. Due to the fact that it was only her ticket that won the top prize, worth a mammoth $590 million.
Gloria MacKenzie - $590.5 million
There’s nothing better than seeing an elderly lady and loving mother win the jackpot. 84-year-old Gloria MacKenzie hit the second biggest ever Powerball jackpot. Accompanied by her son, 57-year-old Scott Mackenzie, Gloria claimed her lotto jackpot win and became rich beyond her imagination after winning the biggest undivided Powerball jackpot ever. She may be a millionaire many times over, but she’s apparently still keeping it simple and loves shopping at Walmart.
Rather than receiving all the winnings over many years, by taking the annuity option, Gloria opted to take a cash lump sum of $370 million. Once the taxes were deducted, she took home $278 million. Not bad, considering how long it takes to purchase a Powerball entry.
Since her record Powerball jackpot win, Gloria has kept a low profile, only speaking out through a statement read by the Florida Lottery representative.
"We are grateful for this blessing of winning the Florida Lottery Powerball jackpot and appreciate the interest of the public”, said Gloria.
The fact that the world’s biggest jackpot winner decided to stay out of the lotto limelight inevitably gave her an aura of mystery.
Cindy Hill - $587.5 million
Cindy Hill and her husband Mark, won their share of the gigantic $587.5 million Powerball jackpot, claiming the third biggest Powerball jackpot ever. The second winner chose to remain anonymous and opted to take the cash option of $192 million before paying Uncle Sam.
Cindy joked around saying, "I think we're going to have a pretty good Christmas.” Cindy also said, "We're still stunned by what's happened. It's surreal. Every once in a while you look at each other and say, 'Did we really win that money?'"
The couple claimed their gigantic Powerball lottery jackpot win with their three sons, Jason, Cody and Jarod and their 6 year old daughter Jaiden.
After purchasing their lucky Powerball lottery ticket, they left it in the car overnight. The following day, after Cindy took her daughter to school, she double checked her entry.
"I didn't have my glasses. I was thinking, 'Is that the right numbers? Is that the right numbers?' And I was shaking, I called my husband and said, 'I think I'm having a heart attack,'" she said.
Her oldest son also expressed disbelief at seeing the correct Powerball numbers.
Not surprisingly, their lives have changed quite considerably for the Hills, with Mark, a maintenance worker finding a new job after being unemployed.
Even though the Hills family could now afford to live anywhere in the world, they did say that the one thing that probably would never change is their zip code.
"We want our daughter to be raised here as well," Cindy said. "We'll stay in this area."
Anonymous New Hampshire - $559.7 million
In January 2017, an anonymous Powerball player from New Hampshire matched all six numbers and walked away with $559.7 million. This winner made headlines by fighting to keep their identity anonymous so we're calling them, The Mysterious Millionaire.
B. Raymond Buxton winner on the 19 February 2014 - $425.3 million
B. Raymond Buxton, made headlines with his the shirt he wore when he eventually claimed his $425 million Powerball jackpot win. He sported a shirt with Yoda on it and the words, "Luck of the Jedi I have” claimed the prize at the California Lottery headquarters in Sacramento.
The story goes that he was getting lunch at a subway restaurant when he decided to buy another Powerball ticket since the jackpot was so big. Luckily he bought the single Quick Pick ticket that turned out to be the winning entry.
The $425 million jackpot was the fourth largest Powerball jackpot in U.S. history, though far from the record. The nation's biggest lottery prize was a $656 million dollar Mega Millions jackpot in 2012 and the biggest Powerball jackpot was $1.586 billion won by three ticket holders.
Buxton, just like Gloria also opted to take the lump sum payment of $242.2 million before taxes.
"'Unbelievable!' is all I could muster," Buxton said, as he described the moment he found out he hit the jackpot. I sat in front of the computer for hours in disbelief, frequently checking and rechecking the numbers across multiple sources. Once the initial shock passed I couldn't sleep for days."
