We are all aware of how luck and lotteries can and have influenced many of us just by buying those lottery tickets that contain our lucky numbers. They give us a bit of fun, entertainment and even hope that we have a chance to become multi-millionaires. Even if we don’t win, we are convinced that eventually our ticket numbers will match those of the tumbling lottery balls and we will be on the road to riches and financial security. There is a similar mindset that some well-known billionaires have as well believe it or not.
The richest man in the world at present is Jeff Bezos from the multi-national and incredibly successful company Amazon that he built up over the years. He is personally currently worth around $119 billion and rising from his success of what was originally an online bookseller that became an e-commerce giant with a current market cap of $947 billion.
“It took hard work and ingenuity, but it also takes something else to be successful, luck! I feel very strongly that I’ve won a lot of lotteries,” he said at the Bush Center’s Forum on Leadership in 2018. “Amazon is one of the lotteries I won. Another is having a great support system. I think one of the precursors of being able to take risk is to have some kind of support from somebody,” he said “You have to have some mentors you have to have somebody that loves you. These are the kind of things that build up and allow you to jump off into uncharted terrain and do something new because you know you have a support system.” In his case, he said, “I had a big lottery with my parents.”
Despite his teenage mother being divorced, Jeff’s mom Jackie “made it work.” “Her parents, my grandparents, helped her and made that all work,” Bezos said at the Bush Center in 2018. His stepfather Mike Bezos who raised him is “a great guy” Bezos said “My dad is a Cuban immigrant. He came here when he was 16 years old. He didn’t speak any English.” His parents really believed in him and invested $245,573 into Amazon back in 1995. “If you don’t get that kind of support somehow, it doesn’t have to be your parents, sometimes people get lucky and it’s the grandparent, or a friend, or a family friend, or a teacher. But you need that. Somebody has to step into your life.”
Jeff Bezos isn’t the only billionaire that says luck plays a big role in his success like a lottery, Facebook founder and boss Mark Zuckerberg says that his family’s financial support and more is a huge part of what allowed him to succeed in founding the social media giant. “The greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail,” he said in a Harvard University commencement speech back in 2017. “If I didn’t know I’d be fine if Facebook didn’t work out, I wouldn’t be standing here today.” “If we’re honest, we all know how much luck we’ve had,” he said.
Journeyman billionaire Warren Buffett often says he won the “ovarian lottery.” “The womb from which you emerge determines your fate to an enormous degree for most of the seven billion people in the world,” he told the journalist Rebecca Jarvis in 2013. He said that he and his Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman Charlie Munger were born “wired in a certain way,” at a Berkshire Hathaway shareholders meeting in 1997 “which we had nothing to do with, and that happens to enable us to be good at valuing businesses.” “And, you know, is that the greatest talent in the world? No. It just happens to be something that pays off like crazy in this system.”
So it seems that huge financial success is partially determined by luck, the luck of where and from whom you were born and the way your brain is wired and a certain determination to succeed without giving up when things are bad. Fortunately for the rest of us, there is a possible route to gain millionaire status without requiring a super clever business brain and rich parents as backup and that is to play your favourite online lottery which requires minimal effort and a very small investment but can propel you into the realms of the mega-rich.
Imagine how winning a lottery jackpot would change your life for the better and give you that financial security we all yearn for. It would allow that winner to spend less time working and more time playing without the worry of not being able to pay all their bills. It will allow you to buy a wonderful new house unencumbered by a mortgage and new luxury cars paid for in cash. Travelling the world could become a once a month activity going to places that were previously out of reach. Flying first class and staying in five-star hotels would be pretty good as well.
