1st of January 2020 - Blaine Marston
At just past midnight seeing in the New Year, Powerball and Dick Clark Productions announced that Blaine Marston from Passadumkeag, Maine was the first Powerball winner of the year when he won $1 million on Powerball during ABC TV’s live broadcast of “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2020.” Blaine was randomly chosen as the lucky winner and part of a national Powerball Lottery promotion live on air by country artist Jessie James Decker.
Blaine said “I can’t even believe it this is unreal, like I’m dreaming!” Product Group Chairman and Maine Lottery Director Gregory R. 11th of January - Rory Richards
Rory Richards from Swampscott, Massachusetts won a $1 million Powerball cash prize in the 11th of January 2020 prize draw by matching the first five numbers. He chose his numbers using a combination of family’s ages and birthdays. Rory claimed his winnings at the Massachusetts State Lottery’s Dorchester headquarters on Friday the 17th of January 2020. What a nice start to his year.
22nd of January 2020 – Mary Evans
Mary Evans from Mechanicsville, Virginia didn’t have to leave her home to buy her Powerball lottery ticket as she’d bought it online. “I bought a subscription because it was convenient,” Mary told Lottery officials. “I didn’t have to go to a store to buy it.” She matched the first five numbers in the 22nd of January 2020 draw and won a handsome $1 million cash prize. 29th of January 2020 - Melanie Wright
Melanie Wright from Baltimore, Maryland was a very happy woman as she left the Maryland Lottery Headquarters to collect her Powerball third tier prize of $50,000 from the 29th of January 2020 draw. The Vacation Life LLC decided they wanted the prize money in a one lump sum payment which amounted to $276,558,034. What a wonderful lockdown surprise that turned out to be. 2nd of March 2020 – Shane Saxon
Shane Saxon from Correctionville, Iowa bought himself a Powerball lottery ticket at a time that he normally wouldn’t and was very happy to win himself a cool $1 million cash prize. “I usually wait until the jackpot is up really high, and then I’ll buy a ticket” said Shane “In this case, I just decided, ‘Why not? I’ll get one.’” He continued “My sister heard that there was a $1 million prize and asked if I bought a ticket and I said yes, so she goes ‘Well go get your ticket and I’ll check your numbers.’ And I checked my ticket and I had the winning numbers!”
Saxon recalled “At first I didn’t believe her, and I said no way, and then she’s like, ‘no seriously for real’ I just kind of paused for a second and my stomach dropped. And it was cool.”
Shane, 31, is a security officer at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City and said he plans to invest in a retirement plan and a new car. “I’ll probably trade in my vehicle now for a new vehicle,” he said. “I’ll be doing some thinking about what I want to do.” He’s very happy that his sister made him check his ticket. Shane said “I would have probably heard about somebody winning it and then obviously I would have known I bought a ticket. I know I would have eventually checked mine,” he said. “Everyone’s talking about it!”
2nd of March 2020 - The Holly Ridge Six
The Holly Ridge Six are six friends from Holly Ridge in Onslow County, North Carolina who meet up each week at Dale’s Pub and try to win the Powerball lottery. Their patience and dedication eventually paid off with a $150,000 win. They like to be called ‘the Dale’s Pub Lottery Group’. One of member the group Brenda White said “We’ve been doing it since the lottery started in North Carolina and we’re going to keep playing.”
For the last fourteen years, they have each put $6 into the kitty each week to play with. “We began with twenty-five people, now we’re down to six” said Jason Allman. It is the Dale’s Pub Lottery Group’s first big win and as they are now on a winning streak, they all say that they won’t be allowing anyone else into the group.
The current Dale’s Pub Lottery Group consists of Brenda White, Jason Allman, Joanna Barton, Lisa Jackson, Virginia Garrity and Myone Trombley. They’re all from different backgrounds and its friends playing the Powerball lottery at Dale’s Pub after work that binds them all together.
10th Of March 2020 - Stephen Piechocinski
Frequent Powerball lottery player Stephen Piechocinski of St. Louis has a morning habit of stopping and buying a Powerball ticket at his local convenience store while traveling to work. Double bubble for half the trouble, how lucky was that? Well done Joe as that doesn’t happen every day. He went to the Pueblo drive-thru claims office to redeem his winning tickets where the claims staff asked what he and his wife planned to do with his winnings. He said “The boss has plans for it”. You can’t argue with that as those plans will be very sensible we’re sure.
4th of April 2020 - Shanika Miller
Shanika Miller of Durham, North Carolina likes to use special numbers made up from ages and birthdays and this combination of numbers won her $2 million on the Powerball lottery. “I keep my same numbers,” said Shanika. “I never switch them up.” Her special birthday number combinations has proved successful for her in the past as in 2017, she won $50,000 on Powerball this time only using her kid’s birthdays as her lottery numbers. She buys her tickets online if she doesn’t have time to go out. “When I don’t have a chance to make it to the store, I play online,” Miller said. “It’s more convenient and I don’t have to leave the house.” She bought her winning ticket online which makes sense during this current lockdown. It is better not to take too many risks queuing at the store mask or no mask.
As she has an online account, they notified her win on her phone. “I woke up in the morning around 6 and looked, and I was crying, I said, ‘No this can’t be real, I kept checking it and checking it and checking it’” recalled Miller. Her children are very happy for her and after she told them about her win, “They said, ‘Mom, you deserve it. You do so much for everybody.’” With her winnings she plans to buy her son a car and after that she said “I’m gonna buy my family a house and pay all my bills off.”
8th of April 2020 - Dorothy Coffey
A lady called Dorothy Coffey from Oliver Springs in Tennessee, USA played the Powerball lottery in the 8th of April draw and won herself a very handy $50,000. More lockdown luck and a very happy Dorothy who no doubt will be doing a bit online shopping with her nice little windfall. Hopefully she will still keep playing the Powerball lottery. 16th of May 2020 – Anonymous
An anonymous forty-eight year old woman from Millsboro, Delaware won $1 million on the 16th of May Powerball draw. She wished to remain anonymous which we fully respect. “This win puts the Powerball total payout at $1.93 million year-to-date, the 2020 Draw Games total payout has reached $17.1 million - we're happy to see Delaware residents playing these games and taking home big wins like this, especially during these tough times. Congratulations to our lucky winner!” said Vernon Kirk, Director of the Delaware Lottery. The winner did consent to an interview but she couldn’t to be reached for comment during the coronavirus pandemic. She claimed her prize at Lottery Headquarters on May 22, 2020.
