Lottery Winners That Give Valentine’s Day A Good Name

Online lottery players all have one thing in common and that is to be lucky in love and lucky in the lottery. After all, it’s always nicer to share your wealth with those you love.

Here are some heart-warming tales of lottery winners who won on Valentine’s Day or have played the lottery for years as a couple and finally won.

NC couple married 70 years has weekly lottery tradition that finally paid off

The first on the list is a couple from North Carolina, James and Maxine Hilliker. They have been buying lottery tickets for years and their lucky day finally resulting in them winning $768,862 a week before their 70th wedding anniversary.

"Our wedding anniversary is next week and today is my 90th birthday," said James after receiving the big check. "I can't even believe this is real. I just can't believe it."

The lovely couple played the lottery together as a weekly tradition and it became a part of their morning routine.

Speaking to lottery officials, Maxine said, "We go to the same store every Tuesday. We always play the same numbers. I've been playing them for over 22 years in California, Florida and now North Carolina. We use my birthday, my husband's birthday, and the birthdays of my three sisters. We've never won anything big. Until now."

The couple said that they had no idea that as they went about their usual routine stopping off to buy their lottery tickets, that they would win.

It was when James was reading the newspaper on the following Monday morning that he had the only winning ticket for Saturday's draw!

Instead of immediately telling his wife, he decided to not break their routine of checking the lottery winning numbers together, like they do every morning.

James said, "I always read them out to her. I call out the numbers and she writes them down and checks them."

Even though James was extremely exciting he calmed himself enough to make sure that Maxine didn’t notice anything different.

James started the routine with his favourite line. "I told her, 'I think you're going to like these numbers today.”

Maxine then said, like she always does, 'You always say that and we only ever match three numbers!'

Recalling the moment, James said, “So I read them out and she looked shocked.

Then she told me to read those again. So I read them out again."

"I told him that I had them all," said Maxine. "I had every single number."

The Hillikers claimed their prize Thursday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh.

After required state and federal tax withholdings, they took home $543,970.

The couple said that they plan to take a cruise with the money. For the most part, they are still unclear what to do with rest but they have a dream trip to look forward to and can take their time to decide.
