El Gordo de Navidad Raffle

El Gordo means “the Fat One”, and is a nickname given to the most exciting Christmas raffle of the year. This incredible raffle has quite a few names depending on where in the world you are. It’s known locally as “Loteria de Navidad.” Those residing outside of Spain call it the Spanish Christmas Raffle, however, its official name is Sorteo Extraordinario de Navidad.

History of the El Gordo de Navidad Raffle

The first El Gordo de Navidad draw took place in December 1812 in the city of Cadiz.

Like many lotteries, it too was created with the hopes of increasing state revenue for the public tax authority.

In 1814 the draw took place in Madrid which has become the centre for Spanish National Lottery draws.

How does the El Gordo de Navidad raffle work?

The first thing to take note of is the fact that unlike lotteries, players do not pick their own numbers. Each ticket comes with a random five-digit number and is split into tenths. Players can decide to either buy a tenth of a ticket, known as a decimo, or a full ticket (billete). Each ticket number is printed multiple times in what is known as a series – this is why there will be lots of players all with the same number.

From 2005 to 2010 there were 85,000 entries (from number 00000 to 84999). Since 2011, this number has been increased to 100 000 numbers (from number 00000 to 99999), with 165 series for each number. Since 2017, the number of series has increased to 170.

The El Gordo de Navidad draw

When the draw takes place, there are two huge machines, called ‘bombos’, which contain thousands of little wooden balls. One machine holds the numbers, and the other contains balls determining the value of the prizes.

One ball is drawn from each bombo simultaneously and students from the San Ildefonso School draw the results and sing them aloud to the public at the Lotería Nacional Hall of Madrid.

They then take the balls over to a table where the official lotto observers are, and the members of the lottery commission take note of the winning number and corresponding prize. Then the balls get placed into a special rack for the records. This repeats for hours until all prizes are given out.

Players can then determine whether they have matched the winning number and instantly find out how much they have won.

The top prize, for example, is worth €4 million per billete. In this scenario, everyone who has bought one billete will win €4 million each, and there could be up to 180 separate winners of the full amount if all the tickets in the series have been sold. A player who buys one decimo rather than a billete will win €400,000 if they land the top prize.

The El Gordo de Navidad raffle sends Spain into a frenzy every year due to the attractive winning odds starting at 1:6:5 for a prize and the odds of winning the top prize are much better than most lotteries, standing at 1 in 100,000. As a result, the draw attracts a huge TV audience all hoping to win a huge prize.

In 2018 the first prize of El Gordo de Navided went to a single winning number and the prize amount was 4 million Euros. There were 170 series' of the 1st prize number, so the 4 million Euro was paid 170 times to a full sheet or ticket with the 1st prize number. People holding a billete with 10 'décimo' tickets of the 1st prize number in 2018 won the corresponding amount of the 4 million prize because they had one of the 170 series with the winning number.
