A man from Oregon almost lost out on being $1 million richer when his Mega Millions lottery tickets almost blew out the window after his wife pulled down the sun visor in their car.
While Jose Martinez was out of town on business, his wife borrowed his car to run some errands. Not knowing that her husband had tucked several Mega Millions lottery tickets behind the sun visor, she pulled down the visor and the tickets nearly flew out of the window.
“I went on a business trip and left the tickets between the sun visor and the roof of my car,” Martinez said. “If the ticket would have flown out the window, we wouldn’t have won $1 million.”
Thankfully, she was able to quickly retrieve the tickets, including an unsigned ticket that neither of them knew was worth an incredible $1 million!
It wasn’t until his wife had nearly lost all the Mega Millions lottery tickets that she suggested he double-check his tickets to see if they had won a prize.
When he returned from his business trip, she mentioned the fact that the tickets nearly flew out of the car window.
“She told me to check the tickets in the car,” he said.
It’s a good thing his wife reminded him to check, as according to Jose, “I used the Lottery’s app and the first ticket I scanned was the $1 million ticket.”
Like so many lottery winners, Jose’s wife had a hard time believing him at first. In fact, he ended up scanning the Mega Millions lottery tickets three times and downloaded the app on his wife’s phone to prove to her that he had won.
Lottery officials said Jose purchased the Mega Millions lottery tickets on May 14, the day of the drawing.
His winning ticket matched 5 of the 6 winning numbers: 11-59-66-67-68 and Mega Ball 18.
When asked what he plans to do with his Mega Millions prize, he said he’s going to use his winnings to pay off their home.
Bobby Sigh, the owner of S&S Market, where Jose purchased his Mega Millions tickets will receive a 1 per cent selling bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Speaking to the media he said that in their 17 years in business they had never sold a ticket like that before.
“It’s amazing,” he said. “We are going to put the bonus back into our business. It’s very shocking and we are happy that one of our regular customers won.”
