A North Carolina woman will never forget the Mother’s Day lottery ticket gift she received from her sister that won $1.3 million.
Vielka Roman’s Mother’s Day was, by all accounts, an ordinary one. She celebrated the day enjoying dinner with her sister Neris and her fiancé Al.
After dinner, they stopped off at Carlie C's IGA grocery store on Cedar Creek Road in Fayetteville, North Carolina. In honour of the holiday, Neris decided to buy her sister a lottery ticket, as it was her favourite game to play.
The following day, Vielka and Al headed out to enjoy a short vacation in the mountains. During the road trip, Vielka asked Al to double check the lottery numbers on his App. He did and was immediately greeted with confetti filling his screen.
In a statement, Al said: ‘I was looking at the app on the phone and saw confetti burst. I had to check the numbers five times to make sure they were real.’
The couple immediately made a U-turn and rushed to Raleigh. Picked up Neris and continued on to claim their lottery prize, which ended up being the third largest jackpot in Carolina Cash 5 history.
Speaking to lottery officials Vielka said, “I just can’t believe it. I’m still in shock.”
After the required federal taxes Vielka took home $958,078 and told lottery officials that she plans to pay off her house and car, as well as help her sister and children financially.
As the lucky couple had recently moved to Fayetteville one of the first things that they are going to do is pay off their mortgage, buy a car and help Neris.
"We just moved here, just bought a house," said Vielke.
"It will be nice to have room to breathe. Neris can have more time to plant in her garden. We will be able to spend more time with each other as a family."
Neris said, ‘I think everyone would like to have a sister like her. She has always been there for me. And when she won, she said to me, “If I win, then you also win.”‘
Al said that Vielka has a heart of gold. She’s going to help out the family. We’re going to pay off the house completely.
Double Mother’s Day lottery win
It’s not just Vielka and Al that got lucky on the lottery this past Mother’s Day. Cheryl Franco and her mother, Elizabeth Thibodeau also won a huge prize on the lottery.
Each woman separately purchased a lottery ticket for the May 9 drawing using the "birth date" numbers of Thibodeau's five grandchildren.
When the Cash5 winning numbers 12 – 13 – 23 – 25 – 26 were drawn for that date, they were an exact match to those printed on Franco and Thibodeau’s tickets, each worth $100,000.
Speaking to lottery officials, Franco said, "I was watching the drawing on TV. I heard the numbers, but I wasn't sure if I was right. I went to the Lottery's website to check the winning numbers and saw there were two (top prize) tickets sold. I knew I had one ticket, but I wasn't sure if my mother had played that night and had the other ticket."
The following day she received a phone call from her brother saying, “Did you see, Mom won? I can take her to Lottery headquarters to cash her ticket.”
Replying Franco said, “Yes, I saw, that's really great. But, I can bring her because I have the other ticket to cash, too!”
"It was a nice surprise," Thibodeau said. "I knew we liked playing the same lottery numbers, we've been playing them for over 20 years, but I didn't know Cheryl had played that night, too."
