Some people wait for ages for success in the Powerball but not Michael Fought from Oregon, in the USA. He recently won $150,000 on Powerball in the draw held on March 23. While you might be thinking the win isn’t exactly that big, the reason he does stand out is the fact that he won on his first ever Powerball ticket!
It was while Michael and his wife were on a road trip that the couple decided to stop and buy some Powerball tickets.
They headed to the Food for Less store in Medford where a chain of events led to the couple becoming first-time lottery winners.
With little experience in buying lottery tickets, the store clerk asked him which tickets he would like to buy. Not knowing anything about the Powerball lottery game, Michael opted for the most expensive option. “I had no clue what she was talking about,” said Michael to lottery officials revealing his story. It was a decision that paid off.
The lucky winning Powerball numbers that came out in the March 23 drawing were 24-25-52-60-66 and the Powerball was 05. As luck would have it, Michael’s ticket matched four of the main numbers and the Powerball to win a total of $150,000.
“My wife and I were excited, elated, giddy and so happy!” said the first-time lottery winner.
When the Powerball lottery officials asked him how he plans on spending his first ever lottery win, the delighted winner said: “We feel so blessed that we were able to pay off some major bills as a result of the win.” He said he would also like to make some minor upgrades to his motorcycle.
It’s not the first time, however, that we’ve seen lottery winners win big on the first lottery ticket they have purchased.
While you might thinking that life’s just not fair, the truth is, this is exactly how the lottery works. Anyone can win! It’s a game of chance, and as long as you have a ticket into the draw, you stand just as good a chance as the next person.
Here as few more first-time lottery players who won big:
$90 Million Powerball Winner
On December 4, 2014, a woman in Seattle, Washington won $90 million on the Powerball jackpot. Lisa Quam and her husband were both first-time players who purchased their lottery tickets on Thanksgiving. The couple stuck their Powerball tickets on the refrigerator so they could be checked on the Sunday after the drawing. When they realised that their first ever lottery purchase had in fact won, the couple were ecstatic.
They took the once-off lump sum payout amounting to $56.8 million.
$5 Turns into $5 Million
Hyun Moon went into a deli in Queens to get five dollars’ worth of change but instead of walking out the store with the change she decided to spend the $5 on lottery tickets instead. Little did she know that her $5 would turn into $5 million dollars!
As she had purchased the tickets on a whim, Moon forgot all about the lottery tickets until a few days later. Thankfully, she did remember eventually and received the good news that she had won a huge sum of money.
When your friends love PowerBall
Lady Luck definitely loves first timers! Another lucky lottery winner is a woman from Blair County, Pennsylvania who won $1 million, while playing Powerball for the first time.

$100k with first ticket
A 21-year old woman in Greensboro, North Carolina took a chance and purchased a Mega Bucks scratch-off ticket.
To her surprise, she won $100,000!
When she was asked what she was going to do with the money; she said that she would use the winnings to attend nursing school.
Jane Park became an instant celebrity in Scotland after winning a £1.000.000 prize with the first ticket she ever bought.
“I had to phone Camelot to confirm my ticket win. It was such a shock. I still didn’t believe it even though it had been verified. Although my family and friends believed me, they almost couldn’t believe it was true. They thought it was too much of a dream as well,” said the lucky first-time lottery winner who was only 17 when she collected her windfall.
Charlie Lagarde won the lottery the first time she played the lottery on her 18th birthday. She took home the grand prize: a lump sum of $1 million.
Unlike most lottery players she opted to take the annuity of $776.73 a week for the rest of her life. Assuming she lives a long life, the decision is going to pay off. Over 60 years, $776.73 USD a week comes out to roughly $2.4 million.
First time Mega Millions player wins mega prize
While driving home from work, a 26-year-old Maryland resident heard on the radio that the US Mega Millions jackpot was $363 million for the Tuesday 27 March 2012 draw.
Up until that point he had yet to buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket. But with the jackpot being so high, he decided to try his luck. He stopped by a 7-11 and bought his first ever ticket.
Later that same night he checked his ticket to find out that he had won the $250,000 second prize in the Mega Millions draw!
“I kind of didn’t believe it at first,” he said. “I ran and woke up everyone in the house. My mom started laughing. Then we double-checked and triple-checked the ticket.”
“I slept well!”
