A single ticket won the whole $768 million jackpot on the US Powerball lottery. By matching the six lucky Powerball lottery numbers, the winner has been catapulted to the third largest jackpot winner in U.S. lottery history.
At a news conference at the Wisconsin Lottery Headquarters, Director Cindy Polzin said that the winner has still not come forward to claim their prize. The only information currently available is that the ticket was purchased at a Speedway gas station in New Berlin, in Milwaukee.
As with all lottery retailers who sell a winning lottery ticket, the gas station will receive $100,000 for selling the winning ticket. This comes out of the state general fund, not from the winnings, said Wisconsin Lottery spokesman David Brauer.
As for the jackpot winner, he or she when they come forward to claim their life-changing Powerball jackpot win, will more than likely take the cash option amounting to $477 million. The winning numbers were 16, 20, 37, 44 and 62 and red Power ball number was 12.
Residents in the area are naturally all talking about who the lucky Powerball jackpot winner could be and expressed their excitement.
“It is amazing. Amazing,” said New Berlin resident Jacqueline Walderyera.
Will the Powerball winner stay anonymous?
Under Wisconsin law, the Powerball lottery winner or winners are able to remain anonymous. They do, however, only have 180 days to claim the prize.
Not the first big Powerball win for Milwaukee
This latest big Powerball jackpot win comes exactly two years after another big Wisconsin Powerball jackpot win. On March 22, 2017, another lucky Powerball lottery players from Milwaukee won $156.2 million.
Third-largest jackpot, not only in Powerball’s 27-year history but in the history of lotteries
This latest Powerball jackpot win is the third-largest jackpot to be won in the world. The largest being the record-breaking $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January 2016. The second-largest is the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in South Carolina last October.
David Barden, Powerball Product Group chairman and New Mexico Lottery CEO, said, “It’s going to be a very green spring for our first Powerball jackpot winner of 2019.”
“A jackpot of this size can make many dreams come true - not just for the winner, but for all Lottery beneficiaries and the lucky state of Wisconsin.”
Powerball lottery results
Besides the huge Powerball jackpot win, there were numerous other big wins that took place in Wednesday’s draw. Seven lucky Powerball ticket holders matched all five main numbers winning $1 million each. They were sold in Arizona, two in California, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey and New York.
A further two ticket holders, one sold in Kansas and the other in Minnesota, matched all five white balls and doubled the prize to $2 million because the tickets included the Power Play option for an additional $1.
