Meet David Johnson, by far the happiest man in Brooklyn right now! The reason for his happiness? Winning $298.3 million on the Powerball lottery of course!
David Johnson was presented his Powerball winnings by Yolanda Vega of the New York Lottery at Resorts World Casino in Queens.
The ecstatic winner, who’s a truck driver for Iberia Foods, told lottery officials while accepting his ceremonial winning Powerball lottery cheque that he was sick on December 26, but had to go to work to get his holiday pay.
On the way to work, he filled up at Arnold’s Station on Linden Lane in Brooklyn and decided on a whim to buy Powerball lottery tickets which included one Quickpick Powerball ticket.
Arriving at work, he worked his shift, then went to bed and messaged he would be out sick the following day.
“A friend of mine, the next driver for the company called me and said, ‘Dave somebody won the Powerball at the gas station,’” he said. “I told him no bro that’s not me man. That’s not my luck,” hanging up, falling asleep and not giving the call a second thought. The lottery winner was so sick he didn’t watch the drawing that night.
It was only the following Friday that he remembered his Powerball lottery tickets and decided to double-check the winning lottery numbers against those on his tickets. So, on his way to work, he stopped back in at the gas station to have his tickets scanned and checked. The winning Powerball numbers for the December 26th drawing were 5-25-38-52-67.
“I looked at the board and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, Jesus, oh my God’” he said. “I jumped up and down in the store…. I got back in my car, turned the music up and zoomed on home.” He kept his winning Powerball lottery ticket hidden in a jacket until he claimed the prize.
The ecstatic winner said he hasn’t been back to work in a while. He ran into his house shouting to his family, “I’m rich! I’m rich! I’m not going to work anymore.”
“I have to lift boxes and stuff like that,” he said. “Don’t get me wrong the job pays good. Its hard work and I always wanted to quit. Now, I get a chance to quit.”
Opting to take the cash lump sum pay out and after taxes, he took home $114 million. Taking the advice from the lottery officials David is working with his attorney to put together a team to manage his Powerball windfall.
The lucky winner said, “I was so happy I couldn’t even eat, I was hungry but my stomach was full,” said Johnson. “I want to sleep but I don’t want to sleep. I’m still happy.”
Plans for the Powerball win
Johnson, a native of the country of Jamaica who came to the U.S. at age 16, purchased his ticket at Arnold’s Service Station on Linden Boulevard across the street from Iberia Foods where he is employed. He said he always plays Mega Millions, Powerball because “If I win, I want to win something big.”
When asked what he planned to do with his Powerball jackpot win, he said he plans to buy a new house in Brooklyn for his family, but that’s not all.
“I always wanted a Porsche, a red one so everyone can see me when I drive on the street,” he said.

Gerard McMahon, 68, from Bayside is another big American lotto winner. This time on the legendary Mega Millions lottery. He recently also claimed a $1,000,000 Mega Millions second-tier prize by matching the first five numbers drawn for the January 1 drawing - making him Queens County’s newest Lottery millionaire.
“It’s a very satisfying feeling,” explained McMahon. “I am very happy and excited.”
The winning Mega Millions numbers for the January 1 drawing were 34-44-57-62-70 Mega Ball 14.
The $1,000,000 Mega Millions second prize is paid as a one-time lump sum payment.
“I plan to use the money to provide for my children and grandchildren and take a view trips,” he said.
Rodney Danforth, 59, from the Bronx also came forward and claimed $1,000,000 on the Mega Millions, for matching all the required winning Mega Millions numbers in the second tier.
“I checked my ticket on the Lottery’s website explained Danforth. “I went to the store and got a print out to verify it was real.”
The winning Mega Millions numbers were 15-23-53-65-70 Mega Ball 7.
When asked at the news conference what he planned to do with his winnings, he said, “I plan to donate a portion of the winnings to my church and take my wife on a luxury vacation to the Dominican Republic.”
