The largest Oz Powerball jackpot prize ever won in Australia has been awarded to a single ticket - a single mum from Sydney who said she won't be quitting her job despite the record amount.
The Oz Powerball jackpot was one of the biggest jackpots in the history of the game when it reached an incredible $100 million. The lucky winner claimed $107,575,649.08 and has firmly placed herself in the history
The winner who has opted to remain anonymous told the lottery officials that she was first under the impression that she had won $107,000.
When she received the life-changing news, the woman, aged in her 40s, just couldn't believe her luck
"Is this actually real? I don't believe it. I don't believe it. Is this a trick?" she said.
Like all lottery jackpot winners, the lucky winner was asked how she intended to spend the money. She responded saying that she wouldn't be retiring and planned to share some with her family and organise travel plans.
"I'm a healthcare professional, but I won't be retiring. I'm so passionate about my job. It will drive me to do more health work for causes important to me," she said.
"I'll be sharing it with my family... I'll be giving my favourite charity some money.
"The win gives me the chance to go and do the things I've always wanted to do... We might buy a caravan and travel around too.
"I'm not sure how I will be able to sleep tonight, but for now I'm going to go have a cheap glass of chardonnay."
She went on to say that she’s a regular Powerball lottery player but this time it really paid off. She usually plays numbers that pop into her head, but this time she marked her winning entry with random numbers and never thought she would win.
"I just don't understand how this lucky ticket has won me $107 million," she said.
"That is just so much money!"
The lucky mum wasn’t the only one to walk away a lot richer. A further 20 ticket entries around the country also claimed the Division Two prize of $94,792.90.
With the Oz Powerball jackpot causing quite a lottery ticket buying frenzy, news agents were swamped by hopeful shoppers making sure that they too bought their lucky Powerball lottery tickets in time for the draw.
Central Pyrmont Newsagency manager Minto said he had sold more than 200 tickets since opening the Sydney store at 6 am.
Play Oz Powerball online
The Oz Powerball is one of the most popular lottery games in Australia and seeing people win huge jackpots like the $100 million, we can see why.
Playing the Oz Powerball is slightly different to the US Powerball, in so much as participants need to select a total of eight numbers: seven from a possible 35 (the standard ball barrel), as well as only one from a possible 20 (the Powerball number).
Like all lotto games, if you matched all the numbers that pop out the lotto machine on draw night, you win the jackpot.
The biggest jackpot won to date is currently $80 million (scooped up during the 30 July 2009 draw), which was equally split between two ticket holders. The game offers nine prize divisions. The minimum requirement to win a prize is to match two standard balls plus the Powerball. The top prize requires a player to match all eight numbers – seven numbers plus the all-important Powerball.
