One of the most exciting lotto games in the world is without a doubt the Mega Millions. With no jackpot cap and a jackpot that has already soared to an eye-popping $1.537 billion, it’s no wonder that everyone makes sure that they too buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket.
Mega Millions History
The Mega Millions was launched in August 1996 under the name The Big Game.
The first draw took place on 6 September 1996.
At the time of the launch only six states participated, but within a couple of years, the lottery expanded enormously and it introduced an additional draw on Tuesdays in February 1998.
Players were given a larger choice of numbers and a "cash pay-out" option in January 1999. In May 1999, New Jersey became the seventh member state.
The Big Game was rebranded Mega Millions with the states of New York and Ohio joining the fold. The game matrix and prize amounts were changed to offer players more excitement.
Washington became the 10th member state followed by Texas in December 2003. In June 2005, California became the 12th member.
The 31st of January 2010, saw Mega Millions make a historic cross-selling agreement with Powerball. This enabled players to play both lotteries simultaneously. As a result of the agreement, 23 more state lotteries joined Mega Millions.
On March 30, 2012, Mega Millions made history with the world's largest prize in any jackpot game ever: $656 million. The jackpot was split three ways, by winning tickets in Kansas, Illinois and Maryland.
Mega Millions became the first jackpot game to offer second-tier prizes of up to $5 million when it relaunched with a new matrix on October 19, 2013.
Mega Millions set another world record in its draw on July 8, 2016, when it awarded a $536 million jackpot, which was the highest cash value lottery prize ever won by a single player.
Mega Millions introduced changes in October 2017 intended to boost the lottery’s popularity and the size of its jackpots. The changes included a revised guess range matrix, the size of both the opening jackpot and the secondary prizes, and the overall odds of winning prizes.
23 October 2018, Mega Millions smashed its own jackpot record and nearly matched the US Powerball jackpot when it soared to an incredible $1.537 billion!
A single ticket purchased in South Carolina matched the five main numbers and the additional Mega Ball number in the draw to win an amazing prize. To date, no one has come forward to claim this life-changing prize.
While this amazing Mega Millions jackpot fell short of breaking the world record set by Powerball, it did set one world record, as its jackpot is the largest lottery prize ever won by a single ticket!
With jackpots that start off at a staggering $40 million and no jackpot cap, the Mega Millions is always an exciting lottery to play. Mega Millions draws take place on Tuesdays and Fridays.
