This year’s Thanksgiving was unlike any other year for a Powerball lottery player, who while tidying up her home ahead of family visiting for the American holiday found a winning Powerball ticket worth $1.8 million!
Tina Ehrenberg was expecting her family to come over and celebrate Thanksgiving at her home. While cleaning her home she came across a stack of lottery tickets on her bedside table.
Realising that she hadn’t double-checked the winning lottery numbers yet, she decided to do so before tossing them out.
She asked her husband to help her and to their disbelief discovered they had won $1.8 million.
"We kept checking the numbers again and again!" Mr Ehrenberg told the Louisiana Lottery Corporation.
"Plus, I called the winning numbers hotline over and over," Mrs Ehrenberg added.
In the nick of time
What the couple have to be thankful for even more, is the fact that the winning lottery ticket was about to expire as it was a ticket for the June 6 draw. This left only two weeks until the cut-off date to claim the win.
Like most lottery winners, Mr Ehrenberg was nervous worrying that something would go wrong.
"I kept waiting for something to go wrong," said Mr Ehrenberg.
But he had absolutely nothing to worry about and the claim went through perfectly.
Speaking to lottery officials Mr Ehrenberg said that they will put the money away for their retirement, with Mrs Ehrenberg saying: "We don't have any plans to buy anything crazy or go on any big trips."
Mr Ehrenberg said, "the most fun is going to be depositing that cheque".
Army vet also celebrates Thanksgiving Powerball prize
Mr and Mrs Ehrenberg weren’t the only ones who got lucky over Thanksgiving,
James Bombard bought his winning ticket online on Wednesday night and woke up on Thanksgiving to an email stating that he won $100,000!
“It feels like I’m in a dream,” Bombard said. “I couldn't be more thankful.”
His Powerball lottery numbers matched four of the five white balls and the red Powerball which won him $50,000. It was due to the fact that he added the Powerball Play feature which doubled his prize to $100,000.
The happy Powerball lottery player said that he plans to use the money for a new car and to go back to school.
“I’m planning to go back to Florida and finish my bachelor’s in golf management,” he said. “I was always planning to finish, but now I’ll be able to.”
