A Pennsylvania man's love of Chinese food and playing the Mega Millions lottery has won him a cool million.
Ronnie Martin of Long Pond regularly stops at a gas station to buy Mega Millions lottery tickets on his way to work in New Jersey.
For the $543 million jackpot drawing, he once again bought three Mega Millions tickets. The numbers that he used for his three Mega Millions ticket came from a fortune cookie that he purchased at a local restaurant several years ago.
Speaking to Lottery officials, Martin said that he like the numbers and decided to stick with them.
The day after the draw he went into the store and scanned the tickets to see if he matched any of the Mega Millions winning numbers from the night before.
The device told him to “See clerk.”
Not knowing what it meant, he went to the store clerk and complained that the scanner wouldn't show him any information.
As Ronnie was quite a regular, Gary, the store clerk, recognised him and knew immediately that Ronnie must be the winner of the $1,000,000 prize from the previous night.
"You've got the million dollar ticket!" Gary exclaimed.
Thinking Gary was just fooling around, he didn’t believe him at all and asked him to scan the ticket to be sure.
Gary insisted he knew it was the million dollar ticket before scanning it, showing Ronnie the five numbers in a row that matched the drawing perfectly. The numbers drawn were 01-02-04-19-29 and the Mega Ball 20. Ideal for those using birthdays and anniversaries and now it seems pretty handy for anyone using fortune cookies too.
Still unconvinced, Martin asked to see Gary scan the ticket.
It finally sunk in for Martin when after Gary scanned the ticket and showed him the display indicating $1,000,000.
“Alright, let's get the form out!" Martin exclaimed.
Plans for the $1M Mega Millions prize
Speaking to lottery officials while claiming his Mega Millions win, Martin and his wife, Shirley, said they'll use the prize money to pay off their house and bills before putting the rest toward their savings.
