An 84-year-old Florida woman - who bought her Powerball ticket after another customer let her get ahead in line - came forward on Wednesday to claim the $590 million USA Powerball jackpot, becoming the largest sole lottery winner in U.S. history.
84 And Money Galore!
Gloria MacKenzie came forward two weeks after winning the second-largest lottery jackpot ever. In a statement read by lottery officials, Ms. Mackenzie said she purchased the ticket after another buyer "was kind enough to let me go ahead in line to purchase the winning ticket." The lucky winning ticket was a Quickpick which gets randomly generated by lottery computers.
Powerball winner Gloria C. Mackenzie, 84, left, leaves the lottery office escorted by her son.
Ms. MacKenzie elected to receive her winnings in a lump-sum payment. After tax it will be worth approximately $270 million.
In a statement Ms. MacKenzie said she was "grateful for this blessing of winning,'' but like many lottery winners before her, said she preferred to stay out of the limelight.
Wednesday's announcement ended two weeks of speculation amongst Powerball lottery players who had snapped up millions of tickets.
Ms. MacKenzie, the largest sole lottery jackpot winner in history, had 60 days from the drawing date to claim a lump-sum payment.
