According to a recent survey, Denmark is the world’s happiest country! Not far behind, Finland, Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands round up the top 5 in the survey conducted by the Gallup World Poll.
After polling thousands of respondents in 155 countries over more than 4 years, the researchers used “overall life satisfaction” and “daily experiences” to rank the countries. They took into account the percentage of people from each country who are thriving, struggling or suffering, as well as daily experiences in the life of that individual.
By and large, rich countries are happier – is that a coincidence? Despite limited sunshine, the Scandinavian countries all rank very highly – why is that? Is there a particular way they live, or do those countries have something that the rest of the world doesn’t?
How would you define “happiness” and what do you need in your environment/surroundings to be at your happiest?
Tell us your thoughts and you stand a chance to win a 4 week bundle – that’s one ticket for every draw over a 4 week period!
* The most original/entertaining idea, as judged by PlayHugeLottos, will win the prize. The competition closes on the 30th Dec and the winner will be announced the following day. *

Happiness, now that is a very general term. For me, I cannot imagine my life without my family, my wife and my two year old son. It is unbelieavable how my son is growing, its really a wonder, I remember when he was very small and all he did was lie in his little bed and cry. Now he is learning to talk, running around the house, playing with his toy cars. It is a remarkable feeling when this little wonder of nature calls you dad when you come home from work and throws his hands around you, then wants to show you what he has been playing with and so on. He just a small boy so he has no stress, no problems becuase he does not undertand it yet, he is full of love and joy and it is honest love. It is beautiful how he is trying to copy what mom and dad are doing, like driving a car, using the laptop, mobile phone, fixing the washing machine, simply everything. His laughter is beautiful and you simply have to love such a beautiful little being. He really fills our life with joy. Of course there are difficult times, when he is sick or is crying, but that simply how it must be, but I would really do anything in order to make him and my wife happy. They are my happiness. It is not always about money or possesions, of course we are glad to have what we have, but other people have far less, but can be happy anyway, simply by being together and being healthy. I really did not expect that being a father would be so great. I would recommend it to everyone.

Wine, woman and song!!! And a few fast cars. Being able to go on fantastic holidays and being able to provide for the ones you love. Money buys freedom and that is ultimately what brings us happiness in this life -FREEDOM!

happiness comes from caring for all those around you, and think about how proud you would feel knowing that you have given all your loved ones the opportunity to experience the best of what life has to offer... i could never be unhappy driving my ferrari, or sipping cocktails by my pool... money makes life so much easier!

Scandinavians eat a lot of chocolate, more than three kilogram per a year. This is their “secret weapon“. That is why we need make the same. The recipe is very simple. Everybody should eat more and more chocolate, oranges and tangerines. This is formula of happiness for beginers.

Your thoughts create your reality. Think unhappy thoughts and you will experience unhappiness. Think happy thoughts and happiness is what you will experience. No amount of money or material possessions can buy you happiness if your thoughts are not in the right place. Being grateful for whatever you have is the key to happiness.

I would define happiness as having a healthy body and of sound mind. With a healthy body and sound mind, it helps me to focus on more important stuff such as helping others, doing things I wish etc instead of being hampered by my own physical disabilities. In order to have a healthy body and mind, my environment has to be unpolluted that is free from harmful chemicals, gases and toxins. The food that I have must also be free from these pollutants as the human body is incapable of neutralizing these pollutants' effects.

Happiness is being with your family, and not worrying about the bank phoning you for debts, because you won the Euro Lottery! Lol. A good start is being with my wife and family, the money will come on
Posted by Saransh (13/12/2010)
Happyness is eternal, a concious state of being in which one has everything that one can every possibly imagine of. For me, HEART + MONEY = HARMONY.. When you've a fat bank balance/you have enough money to complete your and your families wildest dreams.. On everyday basis things like a luxury house, a super car, decent property back up will keep you up and running but will not be a gateway to eternal harmony or happyness... but with power to do things like opening your own michelin star restaurants.. make a hollywood blockbuster.. watch every football world cup live in stands.. fly away to a destination of your choice whenever your soul calls for it.. enjoy different seasons in different countries.. will make everyday of your life an adventure whether work, love or life. With this kind of strength on your side life will be in HARMONY.. and this HARMONY will lead to eternal HAPPYNESS..

I know that in this world money is not everything but everything needs money, so if you can hold a lot of money it will be a lot of good things we can do, but the problem is a lot of money was held by most people who do not bother about his surroundings, my hope god will give me a lot of money so that I can help many people to be able to meet their needs, that's the best barometer of my happiness
Posted by Kylie (13/12/2010)
Family is my first point of happiness. Winning even $500,000 would make me a lot happier. It means i could buy my grandparents house and pay off a few debts and have enough aside to be comfortable. It would be nice not having to struggle for everything and being able to buy my children more then on christmas present each. This time of year just makes me feel like a miser because we are scraping for every penny.

Happiness is being very grateful to the Creator who gave you life to live. Its also about to know where you are leading your life to and giving it a meaning; and knowing that what you are doing everyday is making a difference in either yourself and in the life of others. You should feel at peace in the world around you and feeling the joy all the time without depending on factors from outside. Go for what your heart tells you is good but be mindful to be happy and grateful to what you already have and afterall be ready to understand and accept what nature treats you.

would be very happy if I can give a gift to those in need, such as helping to provide scholarships to those who are unable to continue school but has a good achievement, build and accommodate children orphans in an orphanage so that they feel still has a family, and or something very meaningful way, but to realize it needs huge funds and unfortunately I did not have the funds, sometimes I do not understand why god gave a lot of money to the people who do not care, I will always try my best and hope that god can give opportunity for me to realize my dream in helping others, all of this for a better world

I would define happiness as being able to bring joy and happiness to others, especially those close to you. Being able to give my two little girls the child hood that every child deserves, including some of the children that are less fortunate. A childhood filled with love and laughter a childhood without fear. To be able to give my girlfriend a propper engagement ring and an unforgettable marriage and honeymoon. To help my parents retire peacefully and debt free. To be able to afford moments that make your heart melt, like getting into a brand new Lamborghini Murcielago! Ok the last one was just a bit flamboyant, but i will have more money than I can dream of so who knows.......just maybe!!

Barometer of Happiness: “Happiness” is a term that is , very confusing, elusive, difficult to define, and not perfectly measurable. It is actually a relative term. The great English scholar Dr. Samuel Johnson, once remarked, as narrated by his Scottish friend James Boswell in his biography of Dr. Samuel Johnson, “There is no Happiness in this World”. Boswell asked him “why then people work to earn money, marry, build homes, accumulate wealth, attend parties, socialize etc. etc”. Johnson replied “these are all struggles to attain happiness but nobody is truly happy in this world.” Well, that was in the 18th century. Today when materialism reigns, the very concept of Happiness has undergone a metamorphosis. Despite what surveys may say it is not easy to define or find a perfect barometer to measure happiness. All surveys say, Danes are the happiest lot in the world and this, despite their being the highest taxed country. But they feel compensated, because of free education, free health care, old age pension to all etc. etc. In a country like my India, where despite all claims of increase in per capita income, poverty and dissatisfaction are very high, mainly because of the inequitable sharing of the increase in the wealth of the country. The gap between the haves and have-nots is widening day by day. Only people like Ambanis, Tata, Birla, Mittals, Godrej and their highly paid top executives lead lives of comfort and luxury (I would not say happy) to the jealousy and envy of those who could not afford even one square meal a day. The taxes in my country are equally very high. Highest percentage of income tax is 30 %. This may appear low, but look at these: If I eat at a restaurant I will be charged vat of 12.50 percent plus 10.3 per cent Service Tax plus Luxury tax 20 % if the restaurant is licensed as a posh one. If I go to a movie I have to pay more than a dollar as Entertainment Tax ( percentage varies from state to state from 30 to 50 %). Again If I buy petrol, cooking gas etc. vat and service tax are charged plus exorbitant home delivery charges which can be saved if one takes delivery at the godown of the supplier, but that is not so easy as one has to lift the cylinder himself/herself and weigh it and load it in the car. For anything purchased, be they goods or services the consumer has to pay to the government one or more taxes that too quite high. If I travel in my car, most of the distance, I should be driving bumper to bumper especially during peak hours making driving as one of the most unpleasant experiences. Bankers charge 4 percent per mensum on Credit Card outstanding. And there is corruption everywhere. From morning till next day morning one comes across lots of instances of corruption. When I was struggling after a huge loss in my IT business some 25 years back and became indebted heavily and when the banks and creditors were after my blood, through court cases etc my government ( to whom I have paid all taxes) did not come to my rescue in any way. Still if today I happen to win a big prize through any lottery, through Hugelotteries.com or any other source, they will pounce on me to recover their 40 + % of share in the winning. I was not the running away type but faced all the ignominy during the days of hardship mainly due to lack of money. After enormous struggle and with constant prayers to the Almighty and with the help of a Christian acquaintance from UK, I got a reasonably good job with Oxfam (UK) and thereafter I could slowly turn the corner but not until my daughter got married after her graduation and my son completed his Engineering. He is presently in US. Though he loves to be in India, I have advised him to continue in US as long as possible so that he could accumulate enough of money and come to India where only moneyed people can lead a worthy life. UK once the ruler of almost the entire world, today are not in such a good shape, as they ought to be, but never the less I think they are not unhappy anyhow. While I was in UK for a month in 1995 I had seen many of them leading a life of contentment and some happiness,. Despite not being rich, only in UK one can find lots of volunteers who work for Oxfam, Save the Children Fund etc. and help these organizations raise money to help poor countries. And I have talked to many of them, they find true happiness in that. I have also seen them highly patriotic and valuing humans. I will narrate a personal experience. Once in Bicester in UK, I was trying to cross over the road on the zebra lines. There was no signal light installed there. Every time I placed my foot on the road, some car would come from my right and I would retrace my steps hastily back on the foot-path. This went on for several minutes. Then one passerby ( a local UK gentleman) came to me and asked if I was from India. I said yes. He said ”here in UK we value human lives more than anything else. You just step on the zebra line without any fear and indicate to the coming motorists your need to cross over and they will all stop. And he stood by me and persuaded me to step on the road. And right he was! All motorists screeched to a halt, the moment I stepped onto the road and started moving only after I crossed. Later when I visited London, I saw at many signals, a button that could be pressed by even a single pedestrian to seek for green light and cross the road without the risk of being hit by motorists as they would stop on seeing red light. All these immediately gave me such a sense of respect for the British while my thought reverberated back to my New Delhi where many pedestrians I have seen being hit by vehicles while crossing over the zebra lines and that too when there was green light allowing them to cross. The situation today, though a lot better, has not completely changed yet. The US despite it having more than 80% of world’s gold reserves, is not in the top ranks of Happy countries like the Scandinavian countries. New Zealand despite its per capita being very much more than that of Denmark, is placed 8th in the list of “Happiest countries”. So we can now conclude, it is just not one or few things that make a man happy or his country the happiest place on earth. We need all the following: 01. Enough income for everyone and resultant wealth. 02. The right to work, work to live and not live to work. 03. The least unemployment rate. Economists opine that 2 to 4 % is a tolerable unemployment rate which does not compromise the happiness of a country. 04. Any honest profession should be treated honourable. A refuse collector-disposer is as honourable as the city’s mayor. 05. A corruption free government, 06. The government of the country may tax high, but should provide, free education and free health care to all, 07. The government of the country should also ensure security to every one. None wants to live in constant fear of being robbed or killed. 08. Well enforced discipline, be it gatherings, public places, or roads. Sane driving on the roads should be followed by everyone. Pedestrians and cyclists should be properly trained as to how they should move on roads. They should be treated with respect and care by motorists. 09. A clean surrounding and friendly and pollution free environment. All these plus some more positive aspects of living are necessary in order to make a human happy and make his country among the happiest places in this World. If by God’s grace should I win a huge lottery, I will definitely utilize it mostly for uplift of poor in my country as well as other countries and contribute my might in making others happy. :

Happiness for me is the ability to cater for my family needs & reasonable wants. It is also freedom from fear, resentment and debts. I want to do good in the world & for that too I need money.

Hapiness is peace of mind and being able to provide and support the same for those around you.

Happiness in this world is one of the most subjective terms ever used. But in todays materialistic world we live in a financial comforted society. Finance and security are the most basic means to live life freely and carefee . In once sense if you dont have fear you are happy and you will be happy to spend all the time with your family and love them and nurture them widout worrying about to make money for them . So yes in todays world money is the barometer for happiness but food for happiness will always be love. So I'll convert all my dollars and euros (when I have enough) into a currency of love. By gifting.. partying.. helping people follow their dreams.. chilling.. and charity.. I'll give happyness and in return get Happyness..
